ISSUES OF GENDER EQUALITY DISCUSSED IN BUKHARA

In Bukhara region, the Development Strategy Center and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Legal Reform Program organized a seminar-training on “Strengthening the capacity of persons responsible for ensuring equal rights and opportunities for women and men at ministries, offices and organizations”

It analyzed the work carried out in Uzbekistan in the field of ensuring gender equality and the rights and interests of women, changes in legislation in this direction, as well as issues of international experience and practice.

The workshop has been attended by representatives of the Ministry, regional agencies and organizations, members of the Regional Kengash, USAID staff and the media. There were discussed the gender habits, issues of discrimination and violation of women's rights, legal framework governing gender equality, legislation in the field of protection of women from oppression and violence in Uzbekistan, the problem and its solution.

Speakers highlighted the achievements as a result of reforms in Uzbekistan and current challenges in this area. In particular, in recent years, the issue of gender equality has risen to the level of public policy, and 25 relevant laws have been adopted. For the first time in the history of Uzbekistan, the number of women in the national parliament has reached the level set by the UN. According to this indicator, Uzbekistan entered the top 50.

The share of women in political parties increased to 44%, in higher education to 40%, and in entrepreneurship to 35%. At the same time, women are widely involved in information and communication, innovation, energy and engineering areas.

At the same time, USAID Legal Reform Program experts conducted workshops for participants on the relevance of gender education and gender-based work. In particular, the problematic facts that arise as a result of non-compliance with gender equality in the implementation and maintenance of legislation, the circumstances and causes that led to them were revealed in an interactive manner.

The seminar also provided insights into the content of the laws "On guarantees of equal rights and opportunities for women and men" and "On protection of women from oppression and violence." At the same time, special attention was paid to the issues of creating decent working and living conditions for women, their social protection, increasing their socio-economic, political and legal activity, further strengthening their place and authority in the life of the country, expanding the number of leading personnel for the account of women in the state management, turning them into an active stratum of society, ensuring equal rights and opportunities for women and men.

It was also noted that the recently conducted 15th plenary session of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis adopted a strategy for achieving gender equality in Uzbekistan until 2030, which is an important document in promoting the Beijing Declaration, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women and helping to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

At the end of the training, which was rich in lively question-and-answer sessions, the women participants divided into groups on gender equality issues and strengthened their knowledge gained during the seminar-training in the form of various games and discussions.
