UZBEKISTAN STRENGTHENS RELATIONS WITH THE EUROPEAN BANK FOR RECONSTRUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT

These days, the First Deputy Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis Sodik Safoev together with the Executive Director of the Development Strategy Center,  Member of the Legislative Chamber Eldor Tulyakov, are paying an official visit to the UK.

The key objective of the visit is to discuss the state and prospects of bilateral relations with partners from the UK and international organizations located in London, as well as to inform the international community about the essence and outcomes of ongoing reforms at the new stage in the development of Uzbekistan, about the importance of the upcoming elections.

The delegates met with the President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) Suma Chakrabarti. During the dialogue, the EBRD leader was introduced into the ongoing transformations and changes in Uzbekistan in all areas, into the benefits and preferences created to liberalize the economy and draw foreign investment and actively support small businesses, private entrepreneurship and private property, and into enhanced organizational and legal foundations.
In turn, welcoming the guests at the EBRD headquarters, Suma Chakrabarti noted that he was following the events in our country, and commended the policies and reforms of the President of Uzbekistan in a new vector.

Indeed, owing to the rebooted open domestic and foreign policy, which has been consistently pursued by the head of the republic, Uzbekistan has climbed to 7th position among the 40 states funded by the EBRD. The recent opening of the EBRD Representative Office in Andijan on behalf of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the scheduled opening of similar representative offices in Urgench and other large cities have been contributing to the accelerated social and economic development of the regions.

Showing his awareness of the ongoing large-scale changes not only in the capital, but in all regions of the country, the head of the EBRD expressed the intention to keep on paying close attention to the socio-economic development of the provinces.

November 2017, when the EBRD Office resumed its activities in Tashkent, marked a drastically new stage of mutual cooperation. In 2018, the Bank allocated about 400 million euros to Uzbekistan. To date, the EBRD has invested 1.3 billion USD in the economic sector of Uzbekistan for the implementation of 70 projects. This is the maximum annual amount in the history of the relationship between EBRD and Uzbekistan.

Certain policies of the EBRD on broad support for small business and private entrepreneurship are worth of special mention. Uzbekistan has launched the allocation of bank loans in soums. The enhanced status and sustained stability of the national currency is balanced by the ongoing economic reforms in Uzbekistan.

In conclusion, the parties agreed to further expand and strengthen the established ties.
The meeting was also attended by the Ambassador of the Republic of Uzbekistan to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland Said Rustamov.
