EUROPEAN UNION AND CENTRAL ASIA HOLD CIVIL SOCIETY FORUM

The Second Civil Society Forum European Union - Central Asia took place on October 27, 2020 in videoconferencing format.

The prestigious international online conference brought together the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, the Secretary General of the European External Action Service Helga Schmid, the EU Special Representative for Central Asia Peter Burian, as well as representatives of the foremost civil society institutions of Central Asian states, including Executive Director of the Development Strategy Center Eldor Tulyakov.

The international online conference was organized to contribute to the implementation of priority goals and objectives of the new European Union Strategy for Central Asia, as well as to continue the tradition of the European Union - Central Asia Civil Society Forum, which was launched last year.

Speaking at the forum, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell highly commended the efforts of the European Union and civil society institutions to ensure regional cooperation, stability and prosperity in Central Asia, especially in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, as well as government cooperation.

Helga Schmid, Secretary General of the European External Action Service, also noted that inclusive programs on protecting the rights of socially vulnerable groups of the population - youth, women, the elderly and persons with disabilities prove key in the effective dialogue of civil society institutions with the state.

The international conference is also aimed at further capacity building and expanding opportunities of civil society through the development of dialogue between governments, civil society institutions and the private sector, which should become a platform for the exchange of experience between the member states of the European Union and Central Asian states. The online dialogue was divided into sessions dedicated to regional cooperation, stability and prosperity in Central Asia amid the coronavirus pandemic, and the speakers' speeches were broadcast live on the platform of the European External Action Service.

In his keynote speech at the European Union - Central Asia Civil Society Forum, Executive Director of the Development Strategy Center Eldor Tulyakov told in detail about the anti-crisis measures taken in Uzbekistan amid the global pandemic, effective activities and successful practices of interaction between government and civil society institutions, specifically, non-governmental non-profit organizations and initiative citizens.

As agreed at the event, the results achieved, the proposals and recommendations put forward by the speakers will be presented at the next ministerial meeting European Union-Central Asia with the participation of foreign ministers of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Policy security.
